The Director, Data Engineering is responsible for all Data Engineering across Four Seasons Data platforms with a focus on Commercial use cases and support of the Commercial Data & Analytics internal department. The candidate has experience successfully building and managing an internal shared service Data Engineering capability, with a focus on Microsoft Azure.    

The Director, Data Engineer is responsible to oversee all data engineering technical development and operational support in FS data platforms for Commercial Analytics.   The Data Engineer has experience building an in-house, internal shared service, data engineering capability and overseeing third parties as required to fulfill additional demand.  As the FS technical leader, the candidate will successfully QA all data engineering output and oversee all troubleshooting for new or existing data assets (pipelines, models, etc.).  The Director will be recognized within Four Seasons as a leader in successful delivery (quality, project delivery speed, pragmatism, compliance, adaptation, system performance, cost optimization, and a “built to last” philosophy) with a determined focus supporting the business to achieve its objectives and the value of insights that comes from data assets. 

The Director, Data Engineering will partner with the Enterprise Data Architect and Enterprise Architecture to ensure adoption, compatibility and consistency of IT standards for data platforms and applications/integrations.

The candidate is also partner to the IT Data Project Management team, IT Enterprise BI Operations team, IT Enterprise Data Architect, IT Enterprise Security and Infrastructure team and the emerging Enterprise Data Governance function.    

This role is based in Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Toronto Corporate Office, reporting to the Vice President, IT. This role involves interactions with all departments within Four Seasons, platform providers, and service delivery partners.

Key Activities

Data Engineering

  • Develop, lead and manage internal and third-party Data Engineering capabilities, including CD/CI, AI/ML Engineering
  • Code development and troubleshooting of Azure pipelines (All ETL pipelines) orchestrated in ADF and scripted through Databricks and SQL Stored Procedures
  • Validate data engineering output reflects source data accurately. Develop data quality routines for unit-testing pipeline outputs
  • Load data from diverse sources for User and Data scientist Discovery using ADF and Azure Notebooks
  • Monitor and optimize performance of overall Azure environments including cost optimization of all Azure assets
  • Ensure development integrates with existing pipelines and daily file loads to manage and maintain environment performance and uptime
  • Addressing urgent outage and performance issues - reactive and proactive
  • Refactor enterprise code, redesign partition strategies, build validation and monitoring scripts and processes
  • Communicate with BU stakeholders and end users directly to respond to end-user tickets across service queues, aligning front-end issues back through the environment to the various zones and source files
  • Contribute to and manage operations and new build delivery projects, at department and enterprise delivery level
  • Reprioritize work daily, via daily stand-up for collaborative work distribution as assigned
  • Solution Designs for new Use Cases including integration with existing data platform assets and/or development of new data platform assets so they are consumable for future internal customers (Build Once Serve Many Philosophy)
  • Power BI Evangelist actively promoting not just Enterprise BI but also BI self-service and Departmental BI models, enable FS reporting flexibility and enabling our business unit audience to achieve same.
  • Provide expert Power BI Skills to enable Four Seasons to both create reports in house and enhance existing as required.
  • Supervise technical vendor resources on Reporting Engineering engagements
  • Recruit, grow and develop in-house Data Engineering team members
  • Maintain roadmap of required data engineering capacity (size, scope, expertise level) necessary to support data engineering work anticipated as a result of the FS internal intake prioritization and forecasted operational needs.  Prioritizes competing requests for resource.
  • Represent Four Seasons and Four Seasons IT service culture throughout all engagements including utmost care and commitment to the value of individual connections
  • Leads technical teams through outage and technical roadblock situations
  • Translates business needs into data requirements and priorities
  • Dynamically adapts role based on situation (discovery, prototyping, development, operations, planning, strategy, innovation)


Governance & Strategy

  • Co-author of FS Data Engineering standards with Enterprise Data Architect
  • Facilitate collaboration and decision-making within/across business units to ensure consistent application of IT strategy and compliance with architecture framework
  • Provide strategic and technical advice to senior managers and technical resources in the creation and implementation of new data standards and databases

  • Support the development, documentation, communication and execution of comprehensive strategies, policies and solutions
  • Ensure projects are compliant with technology architecture and design/operate processes to provide ongoing review of in-progress activity against technology architecture and development standards

  • May develop and/or contribute to negotiations of third-party contracts/agreements
  • Conduct pre and post implementation reviews, ensuring all technical engineering and business requirements are met
  • Collaborate with business leaders, IT professionals, vendors and outsourced partners to assess viability/priority of projects/initiatives and ensure engineering issues are clearly communicated
  • Provide expert consultation and participate as a subject matter expert on projects
  • Contribute to the development of project plans by providing input and manage projects/initiatives by directing assigned resources, communicating project status and providing timely escalation of issues
  • Contribute to meeting key project milestones and overall project deliverables on time, within budget, adhering to standards
  • Leads the development of detailed/complex and/or comprehensive project plans and/or large projects
  • Research/analyze business requirements to evaluate and recommend optimal solutions within technology architecture
  • Communicate project status and provide timely escalation of issues to ensure project objectives are met

Experience, Education and Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a business or IT discipline
  • Completion of an MBA considered an asset
  • Minimum 8-12 years’ experience in Data Engineering with experience in Azure
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience with vendor management, specifically with professional services
