 JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the professional staff of The Americas’ Continent Lodging Services (CLS) - Engineering team, the Senior Director, Energy is responsible for driving optimization of energy performance through operational standards, procedures and processes and to support all existing and future owned and managed locations in the Americas.  This position will direct and manage the Energy Group as the Strategic Business Leader of Energy procurement for the continent and drives the Marriott vision to be a Global hospitality leader in sustainable environmental practices, reducing carbon, energy commodity costs and balancing market risk.  This position provides a high level of technical expertise in energy management, energy procurement, and environmental issues and is responsible for ensuring that Marriott’s Energy and Environmental Strategy is properly executed at the property level.  The Senior Director of Energy has responsibility for developing appropriate purchasing strategies to ensure that commodity pricing is at the lowest possible cost and that the contracting plan is at minimal risk to disrupt service to the hotels.  The Senior Director of Energy serves a Subject Matter Expert in utility pricing and billing for regulated and non-regulated markets; and has thorough knowledge of hotel operations and related energy volume profiles. This position will facilitate roll-outs and/or other project management initiatives and serve as the escalation point for energy-related issues for all managed properties.

Strategic Leadership

  • Influences cross-functional stakeholders to create alignment, communicate clearly, drive results and effect change. Collaborates with initiative stakeholders a in a consultative fashion to tailor or implement programs impacting the broader organization.
  • Identifies Energy-related business opportunities and risks by keeping abreast of competitor, industry, economic, and internal information and trends. Solicit input from diverse sources in order to make sound business decisions.
  • Creates forward thinking environment  to challenge organizational norms and paradigms  to drive success
  • Develops strategies to take advantage of or adhere to regulatory and legislative actions regarding energy and the environment.  Influences regulatory and legislative bodies where appropriate in keeping with the Marriott Energy & Environment Strategy.
  • Responds to, solves and makes tactical decisions on business requests that have broader department impact and/or moderate risk.  Presents alternative solutions to business issues by leveraging the broader organization. 


Business/Functional Goals

  • Develops and implements strategies for building certifications such as LEED, ISO50001 and EnergyStar.
  • Leads partnerships with properties and regional finance organization on the development and execution of compelling ROI energy projects while ensuring that any local utility incentives and/or rebates are utilized.
  • Creates high quality commodity purchase strategy communication and overview documentation for ownership groups.  Ensures all owner- related contract communications are documented /tracked for future reference.
  • Create and maintain high quality web presence and training assets
  • Develops a commodity performance metric to align with risk policy.
  • Develops and executes strategies for carbon, waste, and water reduction as well as other sustainability programs.
  • Develops thoughtful / realistic annual budget guidance for properties’ heat, light, and power.
  • Provides leadership, process, technology platforms and strategies to assist properties to minimize consumption/expenses and increase profitability.
  • Studies, ranks  and vets all high potential emerging energy and water conservation technologies
  • Leads and facilitates the delivery of sustainable business strategies and results against growth and profitability objectives.
  • Consults with property and regional leadership on needs in support of their business processes and direction and implements solutions to meet the business needs
  • Develops strategies to take advantage of or adhere to regulatory and legislative actions regarding energy and the environment.  Influences regulatory and legislative bodies where appropriate in keeping with the Marriott Energy & Environment Strategy.
  • Drives creation, accountability and validation of property execution of Energy Action Plans and projects associated with energy audits.
  • Sets priorities and develops a long term plan for procuring energy for all markets.


Managing Execution

  • Develops Standards, Policies, Procedures, and Information for the Energy and Sustainability function.
  • Builds support for and champions key organizational objectives.  Takes calculated risks to move properties forward by setting critical contracting opportunities
  • Acts as a Subject Matter Expert regarding energy related products and delivery to all constituencies (external as well as internal).
  • Utilizes legal resources as necessary to fully review and ensure all contracts protect Marriott and our Owner’s from risk and/or damages.
  • Leads consistency in energy conservation and environmental stewardship in alignment with the continent energy and environment strategy.
  • Leads initiatives to change the structure, systems, or talent of the organization to more effectively support the business strategy
  • Sells ideas persuasively and influences without direct authority.  Negotiates skillfully in tough situations, settles differences, and wins concessions without damaging relationships.
  • Stays abreast of areas around ADA, OSHA, and environmental requirements of EPA, CFC, toxic waste, and recycling; along with applicable regulations and their potential impact on the business.
  • Publishes energy contract and cost information to keep hotels informed and educated on key regional energy strategies.
  • Manages energy providers in order that operations will not be effected by contracting methods or providers failure to fulfill their contractual obligations.
  • Develops plans and programs for GHG, CDC, HCMI, and other related reporting platforms.
  • Ensure adequate tracking of all energy / sustainability projects so that annual carbon reporting is supported and improved.
  • Develops a trusting and respectful business partnership with property ownership entities by meeting or exceeding expectations in contracting, energy conservation, and environmental projects and initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
  • Approximately 20% travel required.


CANDIDATE PROFILE - KEY TALENTS AND EXPERIENCE DESIRED

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum ten years’ experience in energy industry, facility management, industrial and commercial energy engineering, or consulting engineering with a demonstrated track record of leadership in managing projects of significant scope and size; planning, delegating, motivating, evaluating a group of professionals, energy strategic planning, and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of sustainability industry infrastructure and practices.
  • Knowledge of utility deregulation strategies and rate structures
  • Knowledge of carbon reduction and sustainability strategies.
  • Knowledge of retro-commissioning project structure, oversight, implementation, and persistence.
  • Knowledge of environmentally friendly products and practices including recycling, conservation, and renewable energy.
  • Knowledge of market trends, cost, availability, and distribution of utilities.
  • Skilled in data management and analysis.
  • Financial Management skills e.g., ability to analyze P&L statements, develop operating budgets, forecasting, and capital expenditure planning.


Education or Certification

  • BS Degree in Energy, Environmental, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related field; or equivalent industry experience required
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Certification, Facility Management Administrator (FMA), similar certifications in plant operations or energy management preferred.
